Super nintendo(snes) on your phone, a how to guide!!!

Friday, July 18th, 2008

super_nintendo_entertainment_system.jpgSo I knew it was possible for a while, but ive never actually done it. I gotta say it was worth the couple hours of frustration to get it working. I had trouble tho getting a couple games to work. Most notably i wanted to play Lufia 2, alas i couldnt :( . Oh well. I ended up putting final fantasy 3 and 4 and zelda on it for now. You might be wondering why? well its something to do while goin to the bathroom…… Also the phone i did this on is a Motorola Q. Anyways this is how i did it.

Step 1: Install tgetfile.dll. Do to that go here. This allows you to execute stuff outside your my documents folder on your phone(or something like that). I downloaded the tgfdllsp50e.zip. If you scroll down a little its down there under a smartphone row. Basically to install this, sync your phone with ur pc and run the setup.exe from your pc. During the installation look at your phone, it might ask if ur sure you want to install the file. Respond with yes or ok.

Step 2: I went to this thread and downloaded PocketSNES153.rar. You can try the other one, but i couldn’t get it working. Your gonna have to make an account to download, but no worries it doesnt cost money. If the thread ever goes down ill post the emulator here. (i just dont want to piss the creator off by doing that).
Update: To get the regular nintendo emulator, use this one thread.

Step 3: This is I what did, but u can do what you want. I used the explorer from pc to browse through my phone and went to “Program Files” then created a folder called “SNES”. Then i copied the PocketSNES.exe in there.

Step 4: Download some roms. I would use the romnation if at all possible. The other when you download a rom gives u a ton of versions, so if you do just pick one of the roms from each download. It’ll make more sense if you try it. Also i only couldn’t get one game to work, so dont get discourage if a rom fails just try another one.

Step 5: Play the game. On you phone go to “File Manager” then search through to “Program Files/SNES” then click the “PocketSNES.exe” then click “File/Open rom”.

NOTE 1: Heres the catch. I noticed that if I only have one rom in that folder I couldn’t scroll down to select it. So download at least 2 games. The other thing I noticed is that when you go to load a game if there arent more then one save state again u can’t scroll down to select. That last bit is actually what tripped me up the most.

NOTE 2: Your gonna need to go in and map ur keys before you play.

NOTE 3: I had to turn off Transparency effect. Not sure why but somethings where showing up black on the sreen, and when I turned this off, it fixed it.

NOTE 4:* I had to turn on Auto Frame Skip. Otherwise the game runs so rediculously fast you cant play.

Enjoy

Is your mac widget not working?

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

icon.pngSo i started writing my first mac widget. A super simple concept. It kinda goes hand in hand with my previous post about my new job. Basically im not really getting any projects that can show my skills, so one of my friends suggested a mac widget of the phone directory. Super simple to do except there is no feed on there website. All said and done i basically used ajax to pull the php page based on a first name and last name you type in the widget. Then i strip out all the html and display it.

So i got all the code done, and when i went to install it there was an error. “The file ‘name.wdgt’ is not a valid widget and you cannot install it.”

Pain in the butt. It took me a while to figure it out. You have to make a background image of the entire widget and name it Default.png. When a widget first loads it shows this image until the widget is fully loaded. Its easier on the eyes, but if you dont have this image you cant install.

Just thought id share this since it really pissed me off.

Started my new job last week

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

Well I was able to get into my new job about a week ago, and i gotta say its a lot more layed back then my last job. Actually its far more layed back. I started writing this article about a week ago, and it started out with a much raving review of how good my new job was. Well my view has really changed on it slightly. I still think that this is a ‘Uber place to work. However i believe that my position is underutilized. Let me re-phrase that…”The position i applied for is not what i anticipated it was”. One of things i wanted to do in my early career was do graphics full time at least once till i went further. This was my break, or at least i thought. I’m by far under worked, and to top it off i would label it as one of those data entry programming jobs.

Ok so now that i’ve ranted, this job is one of the most laid back jobs, and least stressful i’ve had. Basically my last 2/3 total jobs i’ve had were super long shift and had to bust my ass because of all the deadlines. However i got used to it at my last job(especially since i grew to be the IT Manager), and now going back to a basic it job is kinda tough. Err i started ranting about it again. Ok ok ok… My new job has uber benefits and the pay is better. That alone makes it all worth it. You know what though? Because im in such a position here all it will take is one uber program or idea, and i bet my position will sky rocket :)

On a side note: I think i might redesign this website, i think im getting a little better at design. Perfect time to try it out. Im thinkin more of a grunge design.

Yay I bought a drum set!!!!

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

All said and done…DRUMS ARE UBER. Ive been playing guitar for about 2 years, but the change to drums is so much fun. Everyone should try to play multiple instruments, and in the end i also end up saving money cause im playing the instruments instead of going to bars or whatever. So last saturday i had a dentist appointment, which wasnt that bad but still sucked. Afterwards me and my friend usually have a routine of going to guitar center and wasting money on stuff. This time around however i was armed with GC Credit card and no interest payments for 15 months. So guess what i wanted to buy?! you guessed it, a Simmons SD7K Electronic Drum Set.

525887jpg.jpg Not an expensive drum set at all, but when you add on a new amp and base drum peddle the bill was up to 1200. Being the my card only went up to 700, i started bargaining. He got it down to 766 with a manager discount.. Now stop and think about that….a 500 dollar discount. Pretty damn uber. Then to top it all off he got me a credit card limit raise to make it fit on my credit card.
